Marion Elizabeth (Uhlhorn)Anderson, age 85 of Mora, former operator of the New Sweden store, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, surrounded by loving family at First Light Health System in Mora.
Memorial service was Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Dean Oelfke officiating. Burial was Mon., May 9 at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Darfur. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice that supports those in need.
She was born on October 10, 1925, and graduated from Comfrey High School in 1943. She married Martin Uhlhorn on October 5, 1944. Her first child, Rachael, died due to a farm accident at the age of 18 months. Five sons were born into the family. Martin and Marion were farmers for some years, operated the New Sweden store for several years; and began employment with Fingerhut in 1958. The family moved to Windom in 1966, where she was a supervisor with Fingerhut until it closed in 1979.
She was the first woman elected to the Windom City Council. She ran for state representative, and she had several other jobs including working for Congressman Vin Weber.
In 1983 she married Vince Anderson of Westbrook. In September 2010 she moved to Eastwood Senior Living in Mora to be close to family. Marion love to read, bowling, card games, and Scrabble, to have conversation, and making quilts for grandchildren. Marion was blessed with many friendships through the years. She was a faithful believer in Jesus Christ, Our Savior, throughout life. When asked what she would like as an obituary she responded “that I was born, lived, and died.” She will be remembered for her wisdom, compassion, loving heart, and strong spirit.
She is survived by sons, Maurice (Lori) Uhlhorn of Layton, Utah, Donald (Robin Hanson) Uhlhorn of Mora, Neil (Camille) Uhlhorn of Cliffwood, New Jersey; daughters-in-law, Suzie Uhlhorn of Chandler, Arizona, Mary Uhlhorn of Little Falls; 11 grandchildren, Martin (Brandi) Uhlhorn, Deanne (David) Olson, Rachael (Sean) Witkin, Laurel Chose, Beth Uhlhorn, Joseph Uhlhorn, Michael (Debra) Uhlhorn, Jeremy (Tiffany) Uhlhorn, Anna (Roy) Hoiland, Christopher Uhlhorn, Danielle Uhlhorn; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Irene Lutterman; brothers, Willard (Sarah) Gersch, Edward (Helen) Gersch; sisters-in-law, Betty Gersch and Martha Lindquist.
She is preceded in death by parents, Edward and Katherine Gersch; siblings, Elmer and Lawrence Gersch; husband, Martin Uhlhorn; children, Rachael Ann Uhlhorn, Leon Uhlhorn, Howard Uhlhorn; and second husband, Vincent Anderson.
