Arlan P. Brekke, age 77 of Norwood Young America, formerly of Gaylord, died on Wednesday evening, Feb. 23, 2011 at The Harbor at Peace Village in Norwood Young America after his courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services were on Sat., Feb. 26, 2011 at Albion Lutheran Church in Albion Township, Brown County. The Rev. Lowell Asplund officiated. Interment with Military Honors was in the church cemetery.
Arlan was born on July 3, 1933 to Gerhard and Edina (Shellum) Brekke in St. James. He was baptized and confirmed at Albion Lutheran Church. He grew up on the family farm in rural Hanska and graduated from St. James High School where he was on the football and track teams. He also played on the Godahl Softball team with his brothers.
Following high school, he worked on the road construction of Highway 4. He drove delivery truck for Godahl Creamery for several years. Arlan entered the United States Army. He farmed for a short time after the service before his employment as a field mechanic/machinist with Green Giant in Glencoe in 1960. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Glencoe and had served as an usher. He married Kathleen Obrakta on Nov. 16, 1984 in Glencoe, where the couple lived for a few years before moving to Gaylord. Arlan retired from Green Giant in 1995, but continued to work part time for the company.
Arlan had a friendly, outgoing personality, and generously gave of himself to serve the needs of others. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed waterskiing on the lake at the family farm, fishing, going on leisurely drives, and his time with family and friends. He was truly a gentleman.
He is survived by his children, Kari (David) Kube of Norwood Young America, and Todd Brekke of Spring Park, (both from his previous marriage to Karen Lueck); grandchildren Heather, Nicole, and Elyse Kube; brothers Duane (Janice) Brekke of Hanska, and Loren (Joan) Brekke of Hanska; nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathleen, in 2008; and his brother, Howard.
