Hertha Witt, age 90 of Winthrop, passed away Tues., Feb. 8, 2011, at the Winthrop Good Samaritan Center in Winthrop. Funeral Services were held Fri., February 11, 2011, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, with interment in the Winthrop Cemetery. The Rev. Paul Tessmer officiated. Honorary casket bearers were Arlette Rolfus and Misty Hahn. Casket bearers were James Hahn, Gary Hahn, Douglas Hahn, David Muchow, Dale Doerr, and Bob Peterson.
Hertha Augusta Martha (Bauer) Witt was born on August 22, 1920, in Transit Township, Sibley County. She was the daughter of Charles and Elisa Olga Mathilda (Trebbensee) Bauer. Hertha was baptized as an infant on August 27, 1920, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth, on March 25, 1934, both at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mountville. She attended St. John’s Parochial School in Mountville.
On October 5, 1944, Hertha was united in marriage to Edwin Witt at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, by Pastor Kuehner. After their marriage, the couple farmed in Transit Township, until Edwin retired in 1982. They continued to live on the farm site. Hertha and Edwin shared 51 years of marriage before Edwin passed away on May 30, 1995.
Hertha was an active member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, where she served with the Ladies’ Guild.
Hertha enjoyed visiting with her family and friends, along with gardening and growing flowers.
Hertha is survived by several nieces, nephews, and special friends.
Hertha was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Elisa Bauer; husband, Edwin Witt; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Maynard Hahn, Henry and Ruth Grochow, Margaret and Theodore Huebner, and Viola Witt in infancy.
