Bernhard (Bernard) Ernst Levi Rucks, age 91, passed away on Jan. 22, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Center, Arlington. The funeral was at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Arlington, on Thurs., Jan. 27.
Serving as casket bearers were Robyn Woods, Dillon Hicks, Matthew Nieland, Aaron Rucks, Kelly Rucks, Robert Rucks, Jeremy Price, Sarah Price and Tony Beneke. Those for whom he served as Christian sponsor are his honorary casket bearers, including Marlin Petzel, Cheryl Taylor, Larry Kistner, James Rucks, Warren Sickmann, Pauline Adams, and Donavan Soeffker (deceased).
Bernard was born on August 26, 1919 in the town of Sibley, Sibley County, to Emil A. M. and Alma L. (Thoele) Rucks. He was baptized on September 14, 1919 and confirmed into the Christian faith on April 9, 1933 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Green Isle. He attended rural school south of Arlington and parochial school at St. Paul’s in Green Isle.
Bernard was united in marriage on October 28, 1941 to Lorraine Verna Sickmann at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington. They began farming in Jessenland Township in 1941 and continued farming while starting an Agri-Business in 1958. They sold the farm and moved to Arlington in 1974 to continue operating Bernard Rucks Equipment, Inc. This business sold and serviced dairy, grain, silage, and other farm management systems. They had many customers across southern Minnesota until they sold the business and retired in 1987. They built strong relationships with their only non-family employee, Donald Wolter and his wife, Donna.
Bernard was very active in his church, held several offices over the years, and was currently on the counting committee. He was a member of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, serving as president. He also served on the board of directors of the Farmer’s Union Cooperative.
Bernard’s card games, music appreciation and love for family will be greatly missed.
Bernard treasured spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, card playing, extensive traveling with family and business associates, woodworking, music, and dancing—especially old time and square dancing.
Bernard is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lorraine, and his children, Maynard (Eunice) Rucks of Henderson, daughter-in-law Pamela Rucks of North Mankato, Karen (David) Nieland of Wausau, WI, Sheldon (Sally) Rucks of Hamburg; sisters, Bernice Soeffker and Oradel Kistner, both of Arlington, and Gladys Citrowski of Cypress, CA; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Florence and Milo Petzel, Berdina Petzel, Irene Sickmann, all of Arlington, Mayona & John Lind of Winthrop; 10 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Cameron, Cameron’s infant daughter, grandson, Jeffery Rucks, daughter-in-law, Dorene Rucks, step-grandson, Paul Beneke; also siblings and in-laws Mildred and Arnold Ristau, Oliver and Elizabeth Rucks, Glendora Puckett, Milo Soeffker, Orlin Kistner, Eldred and Violet Sickmann, LeRoy Petzel, and Merrill Sickmann.
