Legion team splits pair of games in District Tournament

Not half bad! That was the case for Sibley East’s American Legion baseball team this past weekend. The local post won one of two games in the Third District tournament at Walsh Field in Gaylord.

Sibley East, the #4 seed from League A, knocked off Cannon Falls, the #1 seed from League G, 5-3 Saturday evening. The black and gold, despite a fast start, then fell to Belle Plaine 13-6 on Sunday.

Sibley East, 13-9, will now play Montgomery on Friday at Walsh Field. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.

SE 5 Cannon Falls 3
Lucas Herd smacked a first inning home run and Matt Pichelmann was steady on the mound Saturday as Sibley East edged Cannon Falls 5-3 in District quarterfinal play.

Herd’s home run highlighted a three run first inning for Sibley East. The lefthander pulled a pitch over the rightfield wall and onto highway 22.

Pichelmann meanwhile would cruise to a complete game victory. The righthander scattered six hits and struckout seven batters in seven innings of work.

Justin Rettmann kicked off the game for Sibley East with a single. He would trot home on Herd’s two run homer.

Sibley East would pick up one more run in the first frame. McKoy Rodning was hit by a pitch. He would score on a two out single by Ben Melsha.

A leadoff walk and a double enabled Cannon Falls to get one run back in the bottom of the first.

Sibley East then made it a 4-1 contest in the third inning. Erik Goetsch led off the at-bat with a walk. McKoy Rodning followed with a double before Pichelmann’s groundout plated Goetsch.

Rodning scored in the fifth frame to push Sibley East’s lead to 5-1. He reached on a walk and scored on another single by Melsha.

A pair of errors led to Cannon Falls’ second run of the game in the fifth inning. Two seventh inning singles led to another run but Cannon Falls would get no closer.

SE 6 Belle Plaine 13
Another fantastic start wasn’t enough to push Sibley East past Belle Plaine on Sunday. The black and gold were on the short end of a 13-6 decision in District Tournament quarterfinal action in Gaylord.

Erik Goetsch provided the early spark for Sibley East when he sent a Belle Plaine pitch over the left-centerfield fence. The 375-foot bomb put Sibley East on top 3-1 as Justin Rettmann and Lucas Herd were aboard after reaching on singles.

Sibley East stretched its lead to 5-1 in the second frame. Three straight walks and a pair of passed balls produced the two runs for the home team.

Belle Plaine would begin its charge with a four run, third inning. Five hits, including a pair of doubles, helped Belle Plaine knot the game at 5-5.

Sibley East would give up two more runs in the fourth inning while scoring one of its own in the bottom of the frame.

From that point on Belle Plaine’s Ryan Diers took command. His fifth inning home run was the start of a 6-1 run by Belle Plaine. Diers also pitched one run ball over the final 3-2/3 innings. The lefthander yielded but one hit while striking out four.

Rettmann highlighted offensive play for Sibley East with two hits and three runs scored. Herd and Goetsch scored twice for Sibley East.

Goetsch pitched the first four innings. He gave up six runs on nine hits while striking out three.

Rettmann would pitch the next two innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. Herd pitched a scoreless seventh frame.
