Gaylord boy saved from drowning at Flandrau State Park

July 22nd, 2010

Fast action by a Flandrau State Park manager and two adults saved the life of a two-year-old Gaylord boy Sunday.

Two-year-old Saul Torres was discovered floating on his back in about three feet of water, about 15 feet from the edge of the shallow end of the swimming pool, according to information provided by the New Ulm Police Department. The woman who found him immediately dragged him from the pool, and called her mother for help.

The two women began first aid and were assisted by the Flandrau State Park lifeguard Samantha Serbus, who started rescue breathing until the boy was breathing on his own. Torres was transported to the New Ulm Medical Center for evaluation before he was released.

Torres’ mother, Yesenia Tobias, was not at the park. Her son was at the park with her two sisters, Erika, 22, and Lisbet, 14.
