Sibley East’s Legion baseball team won one of three games this past week to finish fourth in the League “A” playoffs at Belle Plaine.
Sibley East fell to top seed Belle Plaine on Wednesday. The black and gold bounced back to defeat Norwood Young America but then lost to Le Sueur-Henderson.
Jordan won the league playoffs while Belle Plaine finished second.
Sibley East, 12-8, will play in the Third District tourney which starts this weekend in Gaylord. For more information on the tournament, see article on this page.
SE 1 Belle Plaine 7
Three hits proved to be all Sibley East could manage Wednesday as the black and gold fell to Belle Plaine 7-1.
Lucas Herd provided the lone offensive highlight for Sibley East. He led off the sixth inning with a triple and eventually scored.
Ed Reichenbach singled for Sibley East in the seventh inning only to be stranded at third base.
Belle Plaine meanwhile broke the game open with a five run, fourth inning. Four singles and a pair of Sibley East fielding miscues helped fuel the rally.
Eric Goetsch pitched the first four innings for Sibley East. He yielded four earned runs on eight hits. Goetsch struckout four.
Justin Rettman pitched the final two innings for Sibley East.
SE 6 Norwood YA 4
Lucas Herd and McKoy Rodning combined for five hits and Matt Pichelmann struckout six Saturday to lead Sibley East to a 6-4 win over Norwood Young America.
NYA tagged Pichelmann for four hits and three runs in the first inning. But, the righthander would settle in and allow but three more hits the rest of the way.
Singles by Herd and Rodning would enable Sibley East to knot the game at 3-3 in the third inning.
Sibley East would then take a 6-3 lead in the fourth frame. Erik Goetsch doubled in the rally while Herd and Rodning added two more singles.
SE 3 Le Sueur-Hend. 5
Missed opportunities proved costly for Sibley East’s Legion baseballers Saturday evening as they fell to Le Sueur-Henderson 5-3 in an elimination game.
Sibley East stranded eight runners in the contest. The black and gold also had a pair of runners caught between second and third base.
Le Sueur-Henderson plated two runs in the first inning and three in the second frame. Six hits, including a pair of doubles, fueled the early rallies.
Sibley East reached the scoreboard with two, fifth inning runs. Lucas Herd doubled in the at-bat while Justin Rettmann and Kyle Goetsch singled.
Basehits by McKoy Rodning, Matt Pichelmann and Ben Melsha led to another Sibley East run in the sixth inning but the black and gold could get no closer.
Herd suffered the mound setback. He allowed five runs on six hits in three innings pitched. Justin Rettmann struckout three and blanked LSH over the final four frames.
