“Rafa” is coming back – and this time it’s for real.
Rafael “Rafa” Byrro, a former Gaylord Rotary Club exchange student from Brazil, is returning to the area this week.
Byrro was planning to return to Gaylord and Arlington in the fall of 2009 but work commitments prevented that from happening. “This time is for real,” Byrro told The Gaylord Hub on Monday. He has been planning a return to Minnesota for nearly four years.
Plans call for Byrro to make his return on Wednesday, July 14th. He will be staying with his former host families (Hahns, Mosels, Matz’) before returning on August 15th. Byrro is scheduled to speak to Gaylord’s Rotary Club on Wednesday, August 4th.
Byrro lived in the Gaylord and Arlington area during the 2005-2006 school year and he graduated from Sibley East.
A soccer enthusiast, Byrro became a kicker for the Sibley East football team. He also coached soccer for elementary players.
As for the recent World Cup soccer extravaganza, Byrro believed Spain’s victory was “well deserved.” Although he did admit that his money was on Germany and Argentina.
Byrro also participated in wrestling, speech, track and field and 4-H during his stay in Minnesota.
Byrro’s goal is to visit as many places and friends as possible during his month long stay. “I’m very excited and pumped,” Byrro said about his return.
