The third time was a charm for Sibley East’s American Legion baseball team which defeated host Montgomery 7-4 Monday in the first round of the League “A” playoffs.
Sibley East, the #5 seed, fell to #4 Montgomery twice during the regular season. This time around the black and gold claimed victory in a rain shortened game.
League “A” president Dave Wendtlandt confirmed late Monday that it was an official contest since five innings were completed. The game reached the bottom of the sixth before being stopped. At that time the score was 7-5 but according to Wendtlandt the final score is determined by the last complete inning. Montgomery had plated a run in its sixth inning at-bat which ended with two outs and a runner on first base.
Sibley East plated a run in the first inning. Justin Rettmann opened the game with a walk and scored on Erik Goetsch’s single.
On two hits, a walk and an error, Montgomery answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Sibley East knotted the game at 2-2 in the third frame. Rettmann doubled and scored the run for Sibley East.
Montgomery then scored twice in the fourth inning only to have Sibley East rally for five runs in the fifth. All five runs were scored with two outs. Lucas Herd highlighted the flurry with a double while Michael Bullert contributed a single. The rally was also fueled by five walks.
Herd led Sibley East’s offense on the night with a pair of doubles and two RBI’s. Rettmann scored three times for the winners while Goetsch, Bullert and Logan Reid had one RBI apiece.
Matt Pichelmann was the winning pitcher. He allowed four earned runs on ten hits. The righthander struckout three and walked one.

Sibley East’s Legion baseballers ended their regular season last week with an 11-4 loss at Le Sueur-Henderson.
Zach Herd’s Sibley East squad was outhit 11-3 in the contest. The black and gold was also charged with three errors.
A hit, an error and a walk enabled Sibley East to snag a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But, LSH would answer with five runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.
Sibley East plated its final two runs in the sixth inning. Lucas Herd and Michael Bullert recorded singles in that at-bat.
LSH meanwhile plated single runs in the second and third frames. The home team scored four times in the sixth.
Erik Goetsch pitched all six innings for Sibley East. He recorded six strikeouts.
