Legion team falls to Monty in extra innings

Sibley East’s Legion baseball team was on the short end of an extra inning contest Wednesday. The local nine couldn’t match Montgomery’s eighth inning run and fell to the host 4-3.

Zach Herd’s Sibley East squad is now 10-5 on the season. The black and gold closed out its regular season Tuesday at Le Sueur. Post season play is scheduled to begin Monday, July 5th. A site and opponent for Sibley East is yet to be determined.

Montgomery would be first on the scoreboard as well in the League “A” tilt. A two out, two run rally gave the home team a first inning advantage. A walk, single and double fueled the scoring.

Sibley East would get one run back in the third frame. Alex Reichenbach opened the at-bat by reaching on a walk Matt Pichelmann also walked in the inning while Erik Goetsch stroked a single.

A hit and an error enabled Montgomery to stretch its lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning but Sibley East would come back to tie the game.

Matt Pichelmann walked and Lucas Herd doubled to get things going for the black and gold in the fifth frame. Pichelmann scored on Goetsch’s groundout but Herd was stranded at third base.

A leadoff walk to McKoy Rodning in the sixth inning would help Sibley East knot the game at 3-3. Rodning eventually scored as Ben Melsha followed with a single and Trevor Schrupp reached on a walk.

Both teams had runners reach second base in the seventh inning but could not plate the game winner.

Sibley East threatened again in the top of the eighth. Ed Reichenbach and Melsha hit consecutive singles and eventually reached second and third base. But, Montgomery would get out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to the first baseman.

In the bottom of the eighth, Montgomery had a hitter reach on an error. He would eventually score on a single.

Melsha and Herd led the Sibley East bats with two hits apiece.

Goetsch suffered the mound loss. The righthander yielded three earned runs on ten hits. Goetsch struckout six and walked one.

Pichelmann led off the fourth inning with a home run to trim Belle Plaine’s lead to 4-2.

Belle Plaine had plated four runs on but two hits in the third frame. The home team added two more in the bottom of the fourth to regain a four run cushion.

Justin Rettmann and Lucas Herd set the table for Goetsch in the fifth inning by reaching on an error and walk. Goetsch’s three run shot made it a 6-5 contest but Sibley East would get no more.

Pichelmann pitched all six innings for Sibley East. He allowed three earned runs on six hits. Pichelmann struckout eight and walked three.
