A long weekend of baseball ended with a second place finish for Sibley East’s American Legion baseball team. The local post nine was runnerup in the eight team, 8th annual BOLD Legion Tournament at Bird Island.
Sibley East reached the finals with wins over Kerkhoven and Chanhassen. The black and gold then fell to host Bird Island in the championship game.
Sibley East, 9-4, plays at Montgomery on Wednesday (tonight). Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. Sibley East will play a doubleheader at Belle Plaine on Monday, June 28th.
SE 6 Kerkhoven 5
Overtime paid off for Sibley East in the opening round of the tournament. The local nine advanced to the semifinals with a 6-5 extra inning victory over Kerkhoven.
Three hits, including a McKoy Rodning triple and an Erik Goetsch double, gave Sibley East a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Sibley East picked up two more runs in the fourth frame only to have Kerkhoven rally for four in the fifth frame.
Sibley East would then take the lead for good in the eighth inning when Ed Reichenbach stroked a two run single.
Matt Pichelmann was the winning pitcher. He scattered eight hits, struckout eight, and walked four.
SE 11 Chanhassen 3
A 14-hit attack led Sibley East to an 11-3 victory over Chanhassen Saturday in semifinal action of the BOLD Tournament.
Lucas Herd led the charge for Sibley East. The shortstop had three hits including a home run and a double. Herd also charted three RBI’s.
Erik Goetsch, McKoy Rodning and Ed Reichenbach added two hits apiece for the winners.
Sibley East took command with a seven run fourth inning. Reichenbach and Logan Reid sparked the rally with consecutive doubles.
Goetsch was the winning pitcher allowing three runs on nine hits. He struckout five.
SE 0 Bird Island 10
A sluggish offensive performance proved costly for Sibley East in the championship game. The black and gold managed but four hits in a 10-0 loss to Bird Island on Sunday.
Bird Island led 2-0 before rattling off six runs in the fifth inning. Four hits, including a triple and double, fueled that rally.
McKoy Rodning was the starting pitcher for Sibley East. He allowed eight runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Rodning fanned three.
Lucas Herd pitched the final 1-2/3 for Sibley East and allowed two runs on two hits.
