All Sibley East Sixth Graders will attend school at the Gaylord campus this fall.
The Board of Education approved the change at its meeting Monday night.
Sibley East’s sixth grade for the 2010-2011 school year, so far, has 77 students. Plans are to have three sections with 25 to 26 students each.
Mari Lu Martens, elementary principal, made the recommendation because of space issues. Chip Wolverton, Chuck Hartman, and Travis Raske will be the teachers.
Martens said that letters will be sent to the Arlington and Gaylord sixth grade parents. A sixth grade orientation for both the Gaylord and Arlington students is being planned in August.
Until a few years ago, all of the Sibley East sixth grade students attended the Gaylord campus. Most recently, there have been two sections of Grade 6 at each campus.
With the change, Martens said that the fifth grade classrooms in Gaylord will be moving back to the elementary wing. The Title I classroom, previously located in the elementary wing, and the third section of sixth grade will be moving into the former fifth grade classrooms.
When asked if this is a temporary change, Superintendent Stephen Jones indicated said that he envisioned this arrangement to “becoming the model for configuration of the district.”
