Dandy defense led to a doubleheader sweep for Sibley East’s American Legion baseball team Wednesday. The black and gold improved to 3-1 with a pair of victories over Lester Prairie at Gaylord’s Walsh Field.
Sibley East did not commit an error in the ten innings of play. And Sibley East pitchers yielded but three walks in the twin bill.
Sibley East, 4-2 overall, will play Norwood Young America at Green Isle on Friday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Rallies in the first two innings and steadiness with the gloves led Sibley East to a 7-2 victory in the opening game.
Lester Prairie plated two runs on three hits in the first inning but would get no more off Sibley East starter Lucas Herd.
Sibley East quickly gained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first frame. Zach Borchert and Herd opened with consecutive hits and Erik Goetsch walked. All three runners would score.
Sibley East then took command with a four run, second inning. Logan Reid highlighted the flurry with a double.
Herd earned the complete game win. He scattered seven hits in five innings. The righthander struckout four.
Justin Rettmann spun a one-hitter and Sibley East completed the sweep of Lester Prairie with a 4-1 victory in game two.
Rettmann hurled all five innings for the winners. The righthander struckout three.
Behind Lucas Herd’s triple, Sibley East gained a 2-0 advantage in the third inning. Three singles and an Erik Goetsch double produced two more runs for the home team in the fifth frame.
That would prove to be more than enough run support for Rettmann and the Sibley East defense. Lester Prairie’s lone run came in the third inning. Rettmann meanwhile ended the game by striking out the side.
Goetsch and Herd led the Sibley East bats with three and two hits respectively.
…split with Jordan
Sibley East’s Legion baseball team was on both sides of narrow decisions against Jordan on Monday. The black and gold won game one 3-1 while dropping the second tilt 3-2.
A three run rally by Sibley East proved to be the difference in the opener. The black and gold scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning and would hold on for the win.
Without recording a hit, Sibley East’s first three batters reached safely in the fourth frame. An error scored the first run. Lucas Herd then delivered a two run double to put Sibley East on top 3-1.
Jordan scored its lone run in the top of the fourth. The visitors had their first two batters reach safely in the fifth inning but Matt Pichelmann would get two strikeouts and a flyout to get out of the jam.
Pichelmann allowed five hits and struckout seven enroute to the mound victory.
In game two, it was a three run rally by Jordan that made the difference. The visitors scored three times in the fifth inning to pull out a 3-2 victory.
Sibley East, on a triple by McKoy Rodning, gained a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
The lead stood until the Jordan bats broke out in the fifth frame. Three hits, including two doubles, would fuel the eventual game winning rally.
Lucas Herd pitched for Sibley East. He allowed but four hits in five innings. Herd struckout four.
