The Technicolor mailer from the city said “Vote YES for the Gaylord Area Regional Aquatic Center.” As a taxpayer, I vote No. I believe there are better ways to spend our money than a new pool. With all the economic woes facing our country, our state and our city, I do not believe this is the time to spend $1.5 million on a pool.
Let’s spend it to put new businesses in the empty store fronts downtown. Let’s look at incentives to get people to buy all the homes for sale in Gaylord and increase our tax revenues. Let’s figure out a way to create lasting jobs for the unemployed in our community. The majority of jobs relating to the pool will either be seasonal or lasting only through the construction phase.
The existing pool was allowed to deteriorate to it’s present condition over the last 45 years. Why wasn’t it maintained and updated to meet codes?
If it’s touted to be a “regional center,” let the region pay for it. Don’t put the burden on the taxpayer of Gaylord.
