American Education Week Banquet Monday, Nov. 23

November 20th, 2009

Sibley East will hold its first ever American Education Week Banquet Monday, Nov. 23 at the Arlington Community Center. The public is invited to attend.

A social hour with punch will be served from 6 - 6:30 p.m. The banquet will be served at 6:30 p.m. The meal will be chicken breast with honey bourbon sauce, wild rice, caesar salad, autumn medley vegetables, dinner roll and beverage for $9.

Work of students in Kindergarten - Grade 12 will be displayed at the Community Center. Sibley East’s Swing Choir and Jazz Band will perform during the social hour.

The program, which will honor Sibley East students in Grades 4-12, faculty, staff, and community members, is expected to begin about 7:30 p.m.

Student honorees in Grades 4-12 were nominated by staff. The criteria for the honor is based on academic performance, character, and integrity.

Student nominees and their families will be notified this week if they will be recognized at the banquet. “Each student will receive a free ticket,” explained Superintendent Stephen Jones. “We hope their family will support them.”

In addition to recognizing students, school district employees and community residents will be honored. The Sibley East Teacher of the Year, Paraprofessional of the Year, and Support Person of the Year will be recognized. Staff members will also be recognized for their years of service to the district.

A former school district employee will also be recognized as an Outstanding Retiree, who continues to give to the school district although he or she is retired.

A Friend of Education Award will also be given, for someone who has made great contributions to Sibley East Schools.

The program will also feature the initial Wall of Fame inductees, which will be on permanent display at both campuses. Those recognized for the Wall of Fame are people who have made great contributions to the schools that make up the district through their lifetime, or have graduated from high school here and have had noteworthy accomplishments.

“My hope is to get community residents to attend and support what we’re doing,” Jones said. His former district, Murray County Central, held an American Education Week banquet last year. “Everyone came away feeling so good about education - the staff and the community.”

Tickets are available for purchase in the offices at both campuses. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Nov. 19.
