Tennis team upended in Section semifinals
October 22nd, 2009Sibley East’s tennis team had its season end Thursday with a 4-3 loss to third seed Maple River in Section 2A semifinal action at St. Peter.
The Lady Wolverines, seeded second, won two of three doubles matches but dropped three of four tilts on the singles court.
At #2 doubles, Sibley East’s Mackenzie Timm and Morgan Setterman posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory. The Sibley East team of Katie Glisczinski and Hannah Larson meanwhile won the #3 doubles match 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.
Posting Sibley East’s lone victory in singles was Elena Almici. The exchange student, playing #2 singles, was a 6-2, 6-3 winner.
Falling in singles play were Wolverines Kayla Trocke (6-0, 6-0), Courtney Nienaber (6-2, 7-5), and Ashley Thomes (6-1, 6-3). Sibley East’s #1 doubles team of Lauren Otto and Stephanie Schuneman were on the short end of a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
The loss to Maple River ends the team season for Sibley East’s Lady Wolverines. They finish with an overall record of 16-5. Sibley East, with a 6-2 record, shared the Minnesota River Conference championship this season with Le Sueur-Henderson.
SE 4 St. Peter 3
Sibley East’s tennis team defeated St. Peter 4-3 in Section quarterfinal action last Tuesday at St. Peter.
Winners for the Wolverines included Kayla Trocke (6-4, 6-2), Elena Almici (6-1, 6-1), Courtney Nienaber (6-0, 6-2) and Ashley Thomes (6-0, 6-2).
