Sibley East exchange student qualifies for State
October 22nd, 2009Sibley East’s Elena Almici qualified for the state tennis tournament Tuesday by finishing second in the Section 2A singles tournament at St. Peter.
Almici, an exchange student from Italy, won four of five matches in the section tourney.
In the first two rounds, played on Monday, top seed Almici posted 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4 victories.
In semifinal action played Tuesday, Almici rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Mercier from Waseca. She then fell to Slama from Blue Earth Area 6-2, 6-1 in the championship match. It was Almici’s first loss of the season.
Almici then lost the first set of a true second match by a score of 6-3. But, she bounced back to post 6-1, 6-3 victories and earn a spot in the state tourney.
Almici will now play in the Class A State Tournament. That begins Thursday, October 29th in Minneapolis.
Sibley East’s Kayla Trocke won one of two matches in the section meet. The senior opened play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over a Fairmont sophomore. Trocke then fell to a Blue Earth Area player by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
Two Sibley East doubles teams recorded 1-1 records in the section tournament. Seniors Courtney Nienaber and Ashley Thomes teamed up for a 6-4, 6-1 win in their first match. They were then ousted in the quarterfinals, losing to a Le Sueur-Henderson tandem 6-2, 6-4.
Sibley East’s Mackenzie Timm and Morgan Setterman won their first match 6-2, 6-2. They were then defeated 6-3, 6-0.
