SE tennis team shares conference title with LSH

October 15th, 2009

For the fourth time in school history, Sibley East’s tennis team has won at least a share of the Minnesota River Conference (MRC) championship.

In an MRC clash at Arlington Wednesday, the Lady Wolverines were clipped by Le Sueur-Henderson 4-3. That resulted in the two teams sharing the 2009 conference crown with records of 5-2.

Sibley East’s tennis team shared a conference title with Belle Plaine in 2000. The Lady Wolverines were outright champs in 2003 and 1999.

A win over Le Sueur-Henderson last week would have given Sibley East the title outright. But, the Giants swept the Wolverines in doubles play and managed one win on the singles side.

“It was a tough match,” Sibley East head coach Chad Bachman said. “But, the girls can still be proud of their conference season.”

As it has done all season, Sibley East proved dominant in the early singles matches.

At #1 singles, Sibley East’s Elena Almici remained unbeaten on the season. The exchange student from Italy defeated LSH’s Erin Seaver 6-1, 6-3.

Playing at less than 100% due to an illness didn’t stop Sibley East’s Kayla Trocke from cruising to victory. Playing #2 singles, Trock posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over LSH senior Kendra Wolf.

Courtney Nienaber posted Sibley East’s third win of the day. The senior defeated LSH senior Chelsea Simek 6-2, 6-2.

Senior Felicia Felmlee posted a three set win for LSH at #4 singles. She handed Sibley East’s Ashley Thomes her first loss of the season. Thomes rolled to a 6-2 victory in set one only to fall 6-3, 6-4 over the next two sets.

LSH won all three doubles matches in straight sets. Falling to the Giants were the following Sibley East tandems: Lauren Otto/Steph Schuneman (6-3, 6-3), Morgan Setterman/Mackenzie Timm (6-4, 6-4), Katie Glisczinski/Hannah Larson (6-4, 6-1).
