Grams named All-Star for third straight year

July 9th, 2009

Gaylord Islanders Collin Grams and Brad Walsh were among the players recently named to the River Valley League All-Star Team.

The River Valley All-Stars will face the DRS League’s best on Friday, July 10th at New Prague. A home run hitting contest, which will feature five guys from each team, will begin at 7:30 p.m. The All-Star game is set to start at approximately 8:30 p.m.

This is the third straight season that Grams has been selected to play in the All-Star game. Gaylord’s leadoff hitter is once again the team leader in runs scored. Grams has circled the bases 16 times so far this season. That is nearly twice as many as any of his teammates.

A stellar centerfielder for the Islanders, Grams is batting .255 on the season as he has 13 hits in 51 at-bats. Among Grams’ hits are a double, a triple and a home run. He has also charted six RBI’s and three stolen bases so far this year.

Walsh is leading all Gaylord batters with a .313 batting average. He has 21 hits in 67 at-bats. Among Walsh’s hits are four doubles which ties him for the team lead in that category. Like Grams, Walsh has knocked in six runs for Gaylord this season. He has scored seven times.

Walsh anchors Gaylord’s defense from the shortstop position. He also pitched six innings for the Islanders. The righthander has yielded six runs (3 unearned) on but two hits. Walsh has struckout seven but walked ten. He has not been involved in a decision but has recorded one save.

Left off the All-Star team was Gaylord’s Trevor Vaubel who recently suffered an arm injury. Vaubel handily leads all Islanders with 14 RBI’s. He has also pitched the most innings (27) for Gaylord and carries a 3.05 ERA.

In recent action, Vaubel has played first base or he has been used as a designated hitter due to the arm injury.
