Legion team caps season with pair of wins

Sibley East’s American Legion baseball team capped regular season play this past week with League “A” victories over Lester Prairie and Brownton.

Sibley East, 9-2 overall and 7-1 in league play, will likely be the top seed for the league tournament. A seeding meeting for the tourney is set for this Thursday. The local Post nine will likely tournament play on Thursday, July 9th.

It was payback time for Sibley East on Monday. The local Legion baseballers avenged their only league loss of the season by defeating Brownton 5-4 at Green Isle.

Sibley East jumped off to a 5-0 lead but eventually watched Brownton rally in the sixth frame and tie the game with a grand slam home run. But, Jon Waltz would return the lead to Sibley East. He smacked a game winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

It was a two run first inning for the black and gold. Lucas Herd singled and scored in the at-bat. Erik Goetsch also circled the bases for Sibley East while Justin Rettmann added a basehit.

Michael Bullert scored to make it a 3-0 Sibley East lead in the second frame. He reached on a single and was plated when Nate Pilacinski ripped a two out basehit.

Pilacinski slapped another run scoring single in the fourth frame. Sibley East would score twice in that at-bat enroute to a 5-0 advantage.

Brownton’s offense then came to life in the sixth frame. The visitors’ five run rally was capped by a grand slam home run.

But, Brownton could not complete the comeback and Sibley East plated the game winner in the bottom of the seventh frame. Goetsch opened the at-bat with a walk and moved up on an error on the Brownton pitcher. Waltz then delivered the game winning single to give Sibley East its ninth victory of the season.

Waltz an Pilacinski led all Sibley East batters with two hits apiece.

Goetsch recorded the mound victory. He allowed five runs on four hits in seven innings of work. Goetsch struckout eight.

Sibley East’s American Legion baseballers flexed their offensive muscle Thursday. They cranked out 17 hits and galloped to a 21-3 League “A” win at Lester Prairie.

Four run at-bats in the first and fourth innings enabled Sibley East to take command. The black and gold then blew the game open with a 12-run, fifth frame. Sibley East batted around the order twice in that rally.

All nine players in Sibley East’s batting lineup recorded at least one hit. Jon Waltz and Lucas Herd led the Sibley East hit parade with two doubles and two singles apiece. Waltz also charted six RBI’s while both players scored four runs.

Sibley East had a season best ten doubles on the night. Todd Pauly joined Waltz and Herd with two doubles. Also recording an extra-base hit were Nate Pilacinski, Erik Goetsch, Blake Henke and Ben Melsha.

Matt Pichelmann pitched all five innings for Sibley East. The righthander allowed three runs on three hits. He struckout four.
