Kids wanting to play soccer score a goal with school board

June 18th, 2009

Sibley East students interested in playing soccer next season scored a goal with the board of education Monday. School board members unanimously approved entering into a cooperative soccer program with the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District for the 2009-2010 school year.

Sibley East has considered the cooperative soccer program for the past few months. A survey showed that nearly 58 students (34 boys, 24 girls) in next year’s grades 7-12 would be interested in participating in a cooperative soccer program. Of those students, 22 boys and 15 girls had not participated in a fall sport previously.

It appeared to be the general consensus of the school board that the students be given the opportunity to participate. But, board members didn’t feel the Sibley East district was in a position to contribute financially to the cooperative program.

Therefore, it is anticipated that participants will be required to pay a $200 – $300 fee if they want to play soccer. It is estimated that such an amount would cover an activity fee and transportation costs.

The fee could vary depending on how many kids end up participating in the program. Coordinators will also try to defray costs by asking the Sibley East and Glencoe-Silver Lake booster clubs if they can contribute financially to the program.

Soccer is a fall sport. Jeff Jenson, coach of the team, was at Monday’s school board meeting and spoke highly of the Sibley East players interested in participating. Jenson said he will make an effort to have the team play one of its home games in Gaylord.
