Former State Trooper named interim Chief

May 14th, 2009

A familiar face to many people in the area has been named interim Police Chief for the City of Gaylord.

Council members, Wednesday, unanimously approved the recommendation to hire Kevin Guggisberg as the City’s interim chief. He will fill the void left by Dale Roiger who was recently placed on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave by the City. Roiger is facing charges for allegedly “bugging” the Gaylord Chamber Office.

Guggisberg served as a State Trooper Station Sergeant for ten years and as a Deputy for the Sibley County Sheriff’s Office for ten years. He also worked as a part-time officer for the City of Gaylord.

According to City Administrator Kevin McCann, Guggisberg is willing to do administrative work and is willing to patrol nights and weekends to help the City fill shifts. A wage of $25 per hour for Guggisberg was approved by council members. The fact that benefits were not necessary in the hiring was another reason Guggisberg was a good option for the City, McCann explained.

McCann, Gaylord Police Officer Eric Boon, Sibley County Sheriff Bruce Ponath, and City Attorney Donald Lannoye all believe Guggisberg will be a “good fit” for the City.

Guggisberg’s appointment as interim chief is effective immediately. According to City staff, he will begin patrol duty on Monday, June 1st.
