House votes against before-Labor Day start
March 12th, 2009The Minnesota House Finance Committee, Monday, voted 13-11 against a proposal that would have allowed school to start before Labor Day in 2009.
The committee heard testimony from representatives of Minnesota tourism and the Minnesota State Fair prior to the vote.
The proposal would have allowed schools to start before Labor Day this year because Labor Day is late this year – September 7.
Although the legislation was voted down, individual school districts are allowed to apply for a one-year waiver to start earlier.
Sibley East will start after Labor Day, which was the first choice of the school board, according to Superintendent John Langenbrunner. A new staff workshop is planned Aug. 31. In-service days for all staff will be Sept. 1-3.
School for students in Grades 7-12 will begin Sept. 8. Kindergarten-Grade 6 conference days will be held Sept. 8 and 9, with elementary students starting school Sept. 10.
