City considering cuts to offset shortfall in LGA
March 12th, 2009Anticipating substantial cuts in Local Government Aid (LGA), the City of Gaylord has established a list of proposed ideas to trim its budget.
According to McCann’s report, the State of Minnesota is forecasting a deficit of $4.8 billion for the 2010-2011 biennium budget. And this figure is expected to increase, he explained.
The Governor’s budget cuts consists of reduction in LGA. Proposed LGA cuts for the City of Gaylord total $83,386 for 2009 and $174,125 for 2010.
A few months ago, City Administrator Kevin McCann directed City staff to review respective budgets. The goal was to come up with a proposal that would cut 10% from each department’s budget, McCann explained.
Below is the list of recommendations or proposed ideas on how to trim the City’s budget. Implementing these cuts would require capital purchases to be delayed, according to McCann. He also explained that there would be a reduction in supplies and possible service reductions in leisure and recreational programs.
Proposed cuts totalled $118,947, according to McCann’s report. City Council members will further discuss these recommendations at a workshop meeting in April.
