Trio of ranked opponents tumble past SE grapplers

January 15th, 2009

It was a challenging week for Sibley East’s wrestlers as they fell to Scott West, Bird Island-Olivia-Lake Lillian District (BOLD), and Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial (LCWM) in non-conference action last week.

All three of the Sibley East opponents are among the State’s top 12 in their respective classes, according to Wolverine coach Rod Tollefson.

The Wolverines, 4-7, will wrestle at Watertown-Mayer Thursday. They will compete in the Minnehaha Tournament on Saturday, then host Le Sueur-Hend. on January 22.

SE 10 Scott West 52
Wrestling shorthanded and against the 4th ranked team in Class AA. That was not a good combination for Sibley East’s grapplers Thursday as they fell at Scott West 52-10.

“We had several wrestlers sick or hurt against Scott West,” Sibley East head coach Rod Tollefson said. “You can’t wrestle a team of that caliber without your strongest lineup and expect to compete.”

Sibley East was without its top wrestler Adam Bates. That forced the Wolverines to forfeit the 119-pound match. They also had a forfeit at 112.

With those forfeits and a pin, Scott West jumped out to a quick 21-0 advantage.

Sibley East would win three of the next four bouts. Tyler Pasvogel posted a major decision victory for the Wolverines while Kyle Wiest and Joey Posivio won by decision.

The win by Posivio cut the lead to 24-10 only to have Scott West win the final six matches. That run included four pins, a forfeit and a major decision victory.

SE 22 LCWM 38
