Lady Wolverines lose seesaw battle to H.F. Fire
January 15th, 2009A third straight win slipped away from Sibley East’s Lady Wolverines on Thursday. They fell to Holy Family 58-52 in a seesaw Minnesota River Conference (MRC) battle at Arlington.
According to Sibley East head coach Doug Flieth, neither team led by more than three points until late in the game. That is when Holy Family gained the edge by making its free throws, Flieth explained.
“We played well most of the night but we just couldn’t match [Holy Family] at the free throw line down the stretch,” Flieth said.
Six players reached the scoring column in the first half and Sibley East led at the break 25-24. Marie Rose fueled the Wolverine offense in the opening half with nine points while Ashley Martens and Erin Evans added six and four respectively.
Balanced scoring continued for Sibley East in the second half as the lead continued to change hands.
Martens and Evans scored seven points apiece in the second half for Sibley East while Kayla Trocke tossed in a trio of field goals.
Molly Bell meanwhile fueled Holy Family’s offense in the second half with a pair of three-pointers. On the night, Bell hit a trio of shots from beyond the three-point arc.
The game would turn into a free throw contest in the final four minutes of action. Holy Family would hit 5 of 6 foul shots down the stretch while Sibley East made 3 of 7.
Sibley East finished the night shooting 45% (22-49) from the field and 57% (8-14) from the free throw line.
