Matmen finish in middle of pack in Rumble on the Red
January 8th, 2009Sibley East’s wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack in the Rumble on the Red tournament last week in Fargo, North Dakota.
Nearly 60 teams from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and California competed in the event held at the Fargodome.
Led by Adam Bates’ fifth place finish, the Wolverines scored 79.5 team points and placed 29th. Foley was the team champion with 260 team points, four better than runnerup Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Scott West (Jordan/Belle Plaine) finished eighth while Le Sueur-Henderson was 21st.
“I feel our boys wrestled well,” Sibley East coach Rod Tollefson said. “This was a good tourney to find out where we are at and where we need to be by the end of the season. All of our wrestlers ran into tough competition and help up pretty well. As far as the team, we finished ahead of some very good programs.”
Bates continued his solid start to the season by finishing in fifth place. The 119-pound junior opened with a technical fall win, then fell to #1 ranked Ben Morgan of Forest Lake 10-1.
Bates would come back to win three of his final four matches. He defeated Le Sueur-Henderson’s Brett Pfarr 3-2 in the fifth place match.
Joey Posivio was Sibley East’s next best finisher. The junior had three victories in the tournament. All of Posivio’s win came by pinfall.
Tyler Pasvogel, Kyle Wiest, Nathan Rose, Justin Luskey and Aaron Rose posted two wins apiece for Sibley East. Both wins for Aaron Rose were second period pins.
Next up for the Wolverines is a match at Scott West on Thursday.
