Brian Asmus re-elected chairman of the school board
January 8th, 2009Brian Asmus was re-elected chairman of the Sibley East Board of Education Monday afternoon during the organizational school board meeting.
Anne Karl defeated Jodi Hanson in the election for vice chairperson by a 3-2 vote. Karl was unable to attend the meeting. Board members Dan Woehler, Scott Dose, and Brian Brandt supported Karl’s re-election, while Asmus and Hanson voted for Hanson.
Jodi Hanson was elected secretary/treasurer/clerk, replacing long-time school board member Tim Dolan.
The school board increased its compensation for meetings that last more than four hours. School board members approved increasing the compensation for meetings that last more than four hours to $120, up from $90. The per meeting rate of $50 remained the same. The chairperson and clerk will continue to receive an additional $500/year compensation. The mileage rate was set at the IRS rate at 55 cents per mile.
School board meetings will be held the third Monday of the month at the Arlington School, except for January and February, when the meetings will be held on the third Tuesday due to Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day holidays. Meetings will begin at 7 p.m. in January, February, April, September, October, November, and December. Meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. in March, May, June, July, and August.
The Board of Education approved membership in the Minnesota School Boards Association, South Central Service Cooperative, River Bend Education District, Minnesota State High School League, Minnesota River Conference, and Socrates.
The Arlington Enterprise and the Gaylord Hub were named the official newspapers. The Arlington State Bank, Pro-Growth Bank of Gaylord, First National Bank Minnesota, Cornerstone Bank of Green Isle, and the Minnesota School District Liquid Asset Fund plus were named the official school depositories.
The Board of Education appointed representatives to serve on standing committees. The appointments are as follows:
• Community Education and Early Childhood Family Education – Hanson
• School Policy Committee (Due Process, Discipline, Meet/Confer, School Lunch Appeals, MSHSL, Minnesota River Conference, and Title IX) – Dose
• Negotiations (certified) – Karl, Woehler, Asmus, alt. Hanson
• Negotiations (non-certified) – Dose, Hanson, Woehler, alt. Karl
• Systems Accountability Report – Asmus
• River Bend Special Education District Board – Karl
• MSBA Legislative Liaison – Hanson
• Staff Development – Brandt
• Sibley County Collaborative Council – Brandt
• School District Facilities – Asmus, Dose, Hanson, alt. Woehler
• Continuing Education – Brandt
• Transportation – Karl
• Technology – Asmus and Dose
• Standing Committees on Site Based and Staff Development shall be made up of members from the certified negotiating committee.
• Extra-Curricular Activities Committee – Dose, Karl, Brandt
