SE girls fall short, lose to Belle Plaine 58-48
December 24th, 2008Belle Plaine took advantage of its free throw opportunities Friday to defeat visiting Sibley East 58-48 in Minnesota River Conference (MRC) girls’ basketball action.
The Tigers made 24 of 36 free throw attempts on the night. Sibley East meanwhile went to the free throw line 14 times in the game. The Wolverines made half of their attempts.
Free throws enabled Belle Plaine to roll to a a 29-18 lead by halftime. Fourteen of the Tigers’ points came at the foul line. They had 21 free throw attempts in the first half.
Sibley East’s offense picked up the pace in the second half. The Lady Wolverines would pour in 30 points but more free throws enabled the Tigers to preserve their double digit lead. Belle Plaine sealed the win by making 10 of 15 foul shots down the stretch.
Emily Klehr fueled Belle Plaine in the second half with 18 second half points.
Sibley East meanwhile was led by senior guard Ashley Martens. She scored 17 points on the night, nine of which came in the second half. Martens also contributed six assists, five steals and five rebounds.
Marie Rose and Kayla Trocke added ten and seven points respectively for the Wolverines. Trocke also charted a team high eight steals while Rose led the team with eight rebounds.
Ballhandling woes slowed the Wolverines throughout the night. They were charged with 23 turnovers. Sibley East meanwhile shot 35% from the field.
The Lady Wolverines, 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the MRC, will play in a holiday tournament at Redwood Valley on December 29th and 30th.
