Matmen roll past River Valley 47-15

December 24th, 2008

The rout was on early for Sibley East’s wrestlers Thursday. They won the first ten matches of the night and rolled to a 47-15 victory over River Valley in non-conference action at Arlington.

“It was just our night,” Sibley East head coach Rod Tollefson said. “[River Valley] has a very solid team but our kids were more than ready for the challenge. I was proud of our entire lineup and the guys are really making strides.”

Highlighting the win for the Wolverines was 140-pound junior Kyle Wiest. He led Tony Vaske for most of the match and hung on for a 9-8 victory. Vaske, a junior, is currently ranked #2 in the State, according to Tollefson.

Wiest’s win earned a fist pump and big smile from his coach. “Kyle wrestled an unbelievable match,” Tollefson said.

Brothers Aaron and Adam Bates set the early pace for Sibley East winning by decision and pinfall respectively. Bates remained unbeaten on the season as he stuck his 119-pound foe in less than a minute.

Tyler Pasvogel, a 125-pound freshman, made it back-to-back falls for Sibley East. He finished his foe in 3:42 giving the Wolverines a quick 21-0 advantage.

Wolverines Caleb Ling and Nathan Rose continued the rally. They won the next two matches by decision and technical fall respectively.

Wiest then posted his big victory. That was followed by decision wins by Joey Posivio and Justin Luskey as Sibley East stretched its lead to 38-0.

The ten match win streak for the Wolverines was capped by senior Kevin Lilienthal. He pinned River Valley junior Caleb Hillesheim in the first period of the 160-pound bout.

River Valley would win three of the final four matches. Two of those victories were pinfalls.

Teddy DuFrane closed out the meet in fine fashion for the Wolverines. The sophomore edged River Valley junior Joe Tauer 2-0 in the heavyweight match.

Next up for Sibley East’s wrestlers is the Rumble on the Red Tournament in Fargo, North Dakota.
