Prize to be awarded for the best community slogan

November 27th, 2008

If you want to leave a lasting mark on the City of Gaylord, here is your chance.

City Council members announced last week that they would like the community’s help in determining a slogan for Gaylord.

Plans are to place the winning slogan on a community sign which will soon be erected on the southeast corner of Gaylord’s new mini-strip mall development on Main Street. The owner of the winning slogan will also receive $50.00 in Gaylord Green.

In August, the City Council approved the purchase and installation of a community sign which will be visible from two sides. Scenic Sign Corp. of St. Cloud was awarded the project, submitting a bid of $26,029.

According to City Administrator Kevin McCann, the sign will serve as a community message center announcing all events in the City of Gaylord.

Along with a message center, the sign will have a top cabinet. This symmetrical top cabinet will include the name Gaylord with the City’s tree logo and a spot for a slogan (see photo below).

“The hub of Minnesota” was the slogan used on options for the top cabinet. This was not a popular slogan among council members and prompted City Council President Brenda Pautsch to suggest having the community provide input on how the sign should read.

City Council member Pat Pinske listed slogans used by other communities. Those included:

Arlington
“A beautiful city growing in unity”

St. Peter
“Where history and progress meet”

Moose Lake
“A city for all seasons”

Glencoe
“Small city, big future”

from a small town in Texas
“Small town charm, world class culture”

If you would like to submit a slogan for consideration, the City is asking you to do so by Monday, December 15th. Entries should be submitted to the City Office. City officials ask that you include your name and phone number with the entry.

It is yet to be determined which group of committee will select the winning slogan. Council members are hoping to have a decision made by December. Plans are to install the sign in January, according to McCann.
