Close City Council race goes to Muchow, Wetzel

November 5th, 2008

Newcomer Chad Muchow was the top vote getter in the Gaylord City Council race while Carl Wetzel was re-elected with a narrow victory over Susan Johnson-Schmitt.

Muchow, incumbent Carl Wetzel, and newcomer Susan Johnson-Schmitt were vying for two spots on the Council.

Muchow received 710 votes. Wetzel and Johnson tallied 472 and 470 votes respectively.

Although it doesn’t appear mandatory, a recount is a possibility. According to the 2008 City Clerk Election Guide, a recount is not automatic. The candidate who did not win can request a manual recount, according to the guide. Because of the narrow margin in this case, that recount would be at the expense of the jurisdiction.

Sibley County Auditor Lisa Pfarr reported early Tuesday morning that if a recount takes place, it would be administered by the City of Gaylord, not the County.

Muchow will join Wetzel, Pat Pinske, Jessica Uecker and Brenda Pautsch on the Gaylord City Council in January. Muchow will be replacing Dale Breuer who did not seek re-election. Breuer was serving out the term of Sue Jacobson who resigned in April of 2007.

There were eight write-in votes for City Council.
