Sibley East students to start DECA chapter
October 30th, 2008Sibley East students who are interested in marketing, merchandising and management, now have an extra curricular activity to learn about the careers.
Jacque Hazelwood, business teacher at Sibley East, told the Board of Education recently that seven students are interested in forming a DECA chapter here. The chapter will be part of Sibley East’s Business Club.
DECA, according to Hazelwood, is a blend of leadership training, personal and professional development, and competition and civic involvement.
DECA has been in existence for 60 years. It is recognized by the U.S. Congress and endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education.
The organization offers competitions for individuals and teams. According to Hazelwood, there are more than 35 events. Some examples are advertising campaign, fashion merchandising promotion plan, entrepreneurship promotion plan, food marketing, sports and entertainment marketing, and business law and ethics decision making.
Competitions are judged by businessmen and women. Sibley East will compete in the Mankato District. The state competition is in Minneapolis.
