SE Teachers look at grade reconfiguration

October 30th, 2008

As part of Sibley East’s in-service workshop Oct. 15, faculty explored the realignment of grades.

Principal Mari Lu Martens told the Board of Education that the elementary staff worked in groups to brain storm about educational possibilities, challenges, and cost savings that would be associated with realigning the grade configuration. Her staff looked at the possibility of having one elementary campus and one secondary campus.

The high school staff established leadership groups to look at three issues included in the Sibley East School Strategic Plan 2008-2011.

According to Senior High Principal Jim Amsden, the facilities/grade realignment group will look at determining short and long term facility needs and to review grade level alignments.

A facility task force will review the building’s short and long term needs, and then the committee will make a recommendation to the school board regarding the facility needs relating to improvements, renovations or new construction.

The committee will also review grade level realignment at each campus, gather information about it, review the class schedule at the secondary level, and make a recommendation to the school board on the proposed grade level realignment.

Senior High staff that are serving on the committee to study facilities and grade realignment are Ann Walsh, Don Sauter, Carrie Bartlette, Kathy Nerud, Katie Brown, Elizabeth Zieman, Amy Lorenz, Christine Butler, Ben Jaszewski, Kara Scholla, Jacque Hazelwood, and Mark Standinger.

The Senior High also developed three other work groups to look at diversity issues, curriculum review, and advisor/advisee. Elizabeth Zieman, Mike Feterl, Josh Hill, Rene Moriarty, Tammy Rechtzigel, and Lenore Strouth will serve on the diversity issues group.

The curriculum review committee will consist of Tim Uhlenkamp, Steve Schmitz, Larry Rewerts, Alan Ihrke, Mary Doyscher, Ann Walsh, and Gail Norell.

Serving on the advisor/advisee committee are Mike Feterl, Mike Haller, Christine Butler, Don Sauter, Shannon Hruska, and Chad Dose.

A recommendation on the reconfiguration of grades will be brought before the school board in early next year.
