Many local races part of Tuesday’s general election
October 30th, 2008Area residents will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots for local, state, and federal offices.
Polls will be open in Gaylord and New Auburn from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Gaylord residents will vote at the Sibley East School main gym, on the west side of school. New Auburn residents will vote in the City Hall.
Dryden Township residents will vote at the Gaylord Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
All other township residents will vote in their respective town halls. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in most area townships. The exception is Kelso Township, where polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The City of Gaylord has races for both mayor and council. Incumbent Mayor Doug Quast is being challenged by former Mayor John Schwartz. Three residents have filed for two seats on the City Council. They are incumbent Carl Wetzel, Chad Muchow, and Susan Johnson-Schmitt.
New Auburn residents will have their choice of three candidates for two council seats. Craig Lowden is challenging incumbents Jim Stark and Mike Hauan.
For the first time, area township residents will be casting their ballots for township officers in November. Township elections have traditionally been held in March. There is only one race in area townships. In Dryden Township, Laura Storm is challenging incumbent Sonya Meyer for the treasurer’s position.
Five candidates are seeking three seats on the Sibley East Board of Education. Candidates are Brian Asmus, Brian Brandt, Jodi Hanson, Brian Rodning, and Daryl Thurn. Asmus and Hanson are incumbents.
There will be a new Third District County Commissioner next year. Gaylord residents Jim Swanson and Dan Uecker are vying for the position being vacated by Leo Bauer. Second District Commissioner Bill Pinske of Arlington is unopposed for office.
Voters will also get to cast their ballot for various state, federal and judicial offices.
Three area school districts, Central, Le Sueur-Henderson and McLeod West, will have referendums on the ballot.
The Cities of Gibbon and Winthrop will have special Sunday liquor questions.
