Gaylord seeks grant for wading pool drain project

October 9th, 2008

The City of Gaylord has applied for a grant to help pay for wading pool drain upgrades.

Gaylord’s City Council, last week, supported a resolution for the city to serve as a sponsor for the pool upgrade grant program and that the city has the financial capability to meet the matching requirement, if the city is awarded a grant.

According to City Administrator Kevin McCann, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has a Public Pool Upgrade Program to assist local units of government to meet the new equipment requirements under the Abigail Taylor Pool Safety Act. The new law requires public pools to install an unblockable suction drain and a secondary outlet.

If the grant is awarded, it will cover a maximum of 75% of the project cost, not to exceed $10,000. The applicant must fund at least 25% of the project cost.

The grant application was due October 1. According to McCann, the city has already obtained two quotes for the project and both are less than the maximum amount covered by the grant.

The city is expected to learn within a month whether or not it has been awarded a grant, McCann said. The city hopes to complete the wading pool project this fall if the weather and contractor’s schedule allows, he commented.
