Tennis team has sights set on MRC title
August 21st, 2008Contend for a Minnesota River Conference (MRC) championship. That is the goal for Sibley East’s tennis team which began preparing for its 2008 campaign last week in Arlington.
Seven letterwinners return for the Lady Wolverines this season. That group includes: seniors Becca Paine and Mary Flores; juniors Kayla Trocke, Courtney Nienaber and Ashley Thomes; and sophomores Stephanie Schuneman and Mackenzie Timm.
Sibley East’s quest for a conference title will also be aided by Anna Dreismane, a foreign exchange student from Latvia. According to coach Bachman, Dreismane is a seasoned tennis player who will definitely strengthen Sibley East’s varsity lineup.
Remaining members of Sibley East’s varsity squad include sophomore Katie Glisczinski and eighth-grader Morgan Setterman.
“We have a lot of experience with seven returning letterwinners on the squad,” coach Bachman said. “Our strength is in our singles play, but we’re counting on everybody to achieve our goal of contending for a conference championship.”
With plenty of varsity experience returning, Bachman is planning on plenty of improvement from last season. In 2007, the Lady Wolverines posted a 5-15-1 record and finished third in the conference with a 3-5 mark.
Holy Family won the MRC championship last season with a perfect 8-0 record. Bachman said the Fire will be the favorite to repeat as conference champs. But, he believes his team “will be challenging for the title.”
Sibley East got a taste of competition Saturday with a scrimmage at Belle Plaine.
Official competition kicked off this week for the Lady Wolverines. They opened their season Tuesday, August 19th with a tournament at Glencoe-Silver Lake.
On Wednesday (today), Sibley East competed in the annual doubles tournament at St. James. The Lady Wolverines will then play at Sleepy Eye on Friday and in the Redwood Valley Tournament which is scheduled for Monday, August 25th.
Sibley East’s first home match of the season is set for Tuesday, August 26th in Arlington. The Lady Wolverines will be facing Le Sueur-Henderson in a conference clash. That match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
Sibley East’s junior varsity tennis team will be under the direction of Rene Moriarty this season. The JV squad will consist of ninth-graders Megan Bennett, Courtney Hanson, Hannah Larson, Lauren Otto; eighth-graders April Thurn, Lindsay Fasching, Allison Larson and Tiffany Kirsch; and seventh-grader Mariah Schrupp.
