Two Islanders drafted for Region tournament
July 31st, 2008Josh Gasow and Trevor Vaubel, two members of the Gaylord Islanders team, have been drafted for the Region 6C amateur baseball tournament.
Vaubel, of Mankato, was the second of four draft picks and was selected by runnerup Winthrop. Gasow meanwhile was drafted by Arlington which won the River Valley “West” division playoffs.
VAUBEL
With Vaubel, Winthrop is getting a pitcher and catcher. Vaubel logged more innings (58) on the mound than any other Gaylord player this season and had four complete games. He also led the Islanders with 52 strikeouts, 19 more than any other Gaylord pitcher managed to record.
Vaubel was 1-4 on the mound during the 2008 campaign with an ERA of 3.26. He allowed 21 earned runs and yielded 56 hits and 14 walks.
Offensively, Vaubel posted a .243 batting average in 70 plate appearances. Among his 17 hits were two doubles. Vaubel knocked in seven runs and scored seven runs for Gaylord this season.
GASOW
For Gasow, it was a career best offensive season since he joined the Islanders. The righthanded slugger was second on the team with a batting average of .344. He led all Gaylord players with 90 plate appearances.
Among Gasow’s 31 hits this season were a team best nine doubles. Gasow charted six RBI’s this season and he scored nine runs for the Islanders.
Gasow has been part of Gaylord’s pitching rotation in recent seasons. During the 2008 campaign, the righthanded hurler posted a 1-4 record with an ERA of 4.63.
Gasow, who pitched one complete game, struckout 26 batters in 35 innings of work this season. He allowed 18 earned runs, 28 hits and 22 bases-on-balls.
Arlington and Winthrop will represent the River Valley’s “West” division in the upcoming Region 6C Tournament.
The Arlington A’s captured the “West” title Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Winthrop.
Arlington selected Fairfax pitcher Bryce Rippentrop with its first draft pick and then Gasow with the third overall pick.
Winthrop meanwhile adds Vaubel and Fairfax catcher Adam Buboltz to its region tournament roster.
Arlington will host the entire Region 6C tournament which is scheduled to begin Friday, August 1st. The A’s will face Maple Plaine in the first round. That contest is scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd at 11:00 a.m.
Winthrop opens region play against Le Sueur. Those two River Valley League teams will face off Friday at 8:00 p.m.
