Race develops for School Board, Commissioner seat

A race has developed for Sibley East School Board. Five candidates have filed for three positions on the Sibley East Board of Education.

Incumbent Brian Asmus of Gaylord was the first to file. He has now been joined by Daryl Thurn of rural Green Isle, Brian Brandt of rural Le Sueur, incumbent Jodi Hanson and Brian Rodning of Gaylord as candidates for the school board.

Sibley County Board

Five candidates have filed for the Third District Sibley County Commissioner seat.

James Flantz of Sibley Township and Jim Swanson of Gaylord were the most recent candidates to file. They joined Karl Kuphal and Dan Uecker of Gaylord, and Mark Brandt of Sibley Township as the fourth and fifth candidates. A primary election will be held September 9 to narrow the field of candidates to two.

The Third District includes the City of Gaylord, Dryden and Sibley Townships. The seat is being vacated by Leo Bauer, who will be retiring after 18 years of service.

Incumbent Bill Pinske of Arlington is unopposed for the Second District Commissioner seat. The second district includes the City of Arlington, Arlington and Kelso Townships.

Four positions for Soil and Water district supervisor will be on the general election ballot.

Gerald Smith filed for the District 5 seat but then withdrew when Robert Nielsen filed for the position. Glen Uecker filed for the District 2 seat, but then withdrew when Paul Wiemann filed. District 5 includes Faxon, Green Isle, Jessenland and Washington Lake Townships, and the City of Green Isle. District 2 includes Dryden, New Auburn and Sibley Townships, and the cities of Gaylord and New Auburn.

The incumbent candidates have filed for district 3, which includes Grafton, Moltke and Severance Townships and the City of Gibbon; and District 4, which includes Alfsborg, Bismarck, Cornish and Transit Townships, and the City of Winthrop. Gary Schafer filed for District 3 supervisor, while David Trebelhorn filed District 4 supervisor.

Filing for the school board and county positions closed Tuesday.

The positions will be filled in the Nov. 4 general election.
