Gaylord blanked by Jordan in league play
July 10th, 2008A pitching gem by Jordan’s Alex Beckman spelled defeat for Gaylord’s amateur baseballers last Tuesday.
The Islanders managed but five hits and fell to the Brewers 6-0 in River Valley League play at Walsh Field.
After giving up a hit to Gaylord’s first batter of the game, Beckman found a groove and guided his team to victory. The righthander struckout all three Sibley East batters in the second and ninth innings. He finished the tilt with 15 strikeouts.
Jordan would score all it would prove to need in the first inning. A pair of singles pushed across one run for the Brewers.
Gaylord’s Paul Mages led off the bottom of the first with a single but was quickly forced out at second on a groundball off the bat of Brian Winter.
The best scoring chance for the Islanders came in the sixth inning. Josh Gasow stroked a two-out double but a groundout enabled Beckman to keep his shutout bid alive.
Jordan meanwhile tacked on to its lead in the sixth inning. A two-out single and a throwing error put the visitors on top 2-0.
Four walks and a Gaylord error produced three Jordan runs in the seventh inning. The Brewers added one more run on one hit in the ninth frame.
Mages led all Islanders with a pair of singles. Sam Myhro, Brian Rodning and Josh Gasow recorded the other three hits for Gaylord.
Mages was also tagged with the mound loss. The righthander allowed six runs, five of which were earned, in nine innings of action. Mages yielded six hits, struckout one and walked eleven.
The Islanders will try to end a six game losing streak Thursday when they host Victoria. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Walsh Field.
Gaylord will wrap up its regular season with a home game against Henderson on Sunday, July 13th. That contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
River Valley League playoff action will begin the week of July 14th. More details on the playoffs will be published in next week’s edition of The Gaylord Hub.
