Islanders can’t keep pace with Arlington A’s

July 3rd, 2008

Gaylord’s Collin Grams led off with a home run Friday but that would prove to be the extent of offensive highlights for the Islanders.

Behind the solid pitching of Scott Dose, Arlington’s A’s cruised to a 6-2 win over Gaylord in River Valley League action at Walsh Field.

Grams had good luck and bad luck. He sent a Dose offering over the leftfield fence in the first frame. Grams then had to leave the game in the eighth inning. While on deck, he was hit on the chin with a line drive foul ball. Grams immediately fell to the ground. He would be OK but the freak accident led to stitches for Grams.

Gaylord’s 1-0 lead courtesy of Grams would be shortlived. Arlington knotted the game with a run on one hit in the second inning.

Without recording a hit, Arlington would add to its lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. The A’s then rallied for three runs on three hits in the seventh frame.

Gaylord hinted at comeback in the ninth inning as its first three batters of the frame reached safely. Josh Gasow led off the at-bat with a single and he scored on Darin Hendley’s double. Paul Mages followed with a walk but th next three batters for the Islanders were retired.

Dose worked a complete game for Arlington allowing two runs on six hits. The righthander struckout 12 Gaylord batters and walked three.

Gasow pitched for the Islanders. He yielded six runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits. Gasow struckout two but walked eight.

Gaylord relief pitcher Brian Winter held Arlington scoreless over the final two innings.

The Islanders, 5-14 overall and 2-13 in River Valley League action, will host Brownton on Wednesday, July 9th. Game time is set for 7:30.

Gaylord 2 Fairfax 4

It was another shaky offensive performance for Gaylord’s Islanders on Sunday as they fell to host Fairfax 4-2.

Mike Walsh’s Islanders scattered seven hits in the league tilt, one more than Fairfax. But, missed scoring opportunities early and late in the game would be the difference.

Gaylord stranded runners at second and third base in the first inning while Fairfax managed to plate a run in its opening at-bat.

Brian Winter and Brian Rodning put the Islanders on the board in the fourth frame. The duo laced back-to-back doubles to knot the game at 1-1.

A double and Gaylord error enabled Fairfax to regain the lead in the sixth inning.

The Islanders then evened the score at 2-2 in the eighth frame. Josh Gasow reached on a walk and scored on a groundout.

Gaylord would strand three baserunners in the eighth and it would prove costly. Fairfax regained the lead for good with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth frame. The Islanders meanwhile went down in order in their final at-bat.

Rodning led all Gaylord bats in the loss with a pair of doubles.

Trevor Vaubel pitched all nine innings for the Islanders. He struckout four and walked two.
