City awarded grant to improve polling place

December 6th, 2007

Where will Gaylord residents hold elections in the future? That is the question that must soon be decided by the City Council.

The City of Gaylord, last week, was awarded a $6,000 grant from the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office to improve polling place accessibility.

According to acting city administrator Lori Waltz, the grant was going to be used for a handicapped entrance at the current library facility, when it was thought that the building would be remodeled for city offices.

Now, it appears that the council has to decide whether or not to remodel the building for city offices or for a Senior citizen center.

If the council decides not to hold elections in the current public library building, Waltz said that the grant will need to be returned.

Elections for 2008 are planned to be held at the Gaylord Legion.

Gaylord’s grant was among 119 awarded, totaling $263,657.
