Students are following new cell phone policies

September 13th, 2007

Sibley East Junior High and Senior High students have been abiding by new policies governing cell phone use.

Senior High Principal Jim Swanson said that he did not confiscate any cell phones the first three days of school. However, he said that he issued some warnings about the school’s dress code.

Junior High Principal Steve Harter said that he has not confiscated any cell phones, either. Harter said that he explained to all of the students why cell phones are not allowed at the Junior High School. Most students were aware of the policy before school started, he said.

Junior High students who carry cell phones are required to turn them in at the office and may pick them up at the end of the day. Harter said that one student chose to leave a cell phone with the school secretary.

Under the new policy, cell phones are not permitted at the Junior High School. If students need to use a cell phone to reach parents, employer, etc., they may leave the cell phone in the office when they enter school. Students found with cell phones in their possession will have the phone confiscated and their parents will have to come to school to pick it up. In addition, students will be assigned detention, according to the Junior High discipline policy.

Cell phones are not allowed in the classrooms at Sibley East Senior High School. According to the new policy, students are not to be in possession of a cell phone after class bells ring, signaling the beginning of class. Cell phones are to be left in the lockers or at home.

If a student brings a cell phone to class, the new policy states that it will be taken from the student and brought to the office. Parents will have to pick up the phone after school.

A second offense will result in detention, the phone will be taken away and brought to the office, and parents will have to pick it up.
