Immanuel Lutheran will open school year Tuesday

“Rejoice in His Majesty” is the theme at Immanuel Lutheran School for the 2007-2008 school year.

Classes start for students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 on Tuesday, September 4. The preschool program begins September 10.

Opening worship for the start of the school year will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The public is invited.

There are 55 students enrolled in preKindergarten through Grade 8, according to Administrator Ben Holten. The school has a “nice increase in the lower levels,” he said. There are 16 three and four-year-olds and there will be nine or 10 Kindergarten students, he said. Classes are held from 8:20 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.

Teachers are: Mrs. Bernau – pre-Kindergarten; Mrs. Kuphal – Kindergarten and Grade 1; Mrs. Zumhofe – Grades 2-4; Mrs. Scharf – Grades 5 and 6; and Mr. Holten – Grades 7 and 8. Heather Zellmann is the school’s new secretary.

Teachers will be moving between the classrooms this year, Holten said. Mrs. Zumhofe will teach science to students in Grades 2-8, while Holten will teach music for those students. Mrs. Scharf will teach English and literature for students in Grades 5-8.

This year, Immanuel is expanding its rigorous math curriculum to Grade 4. New resources for added to the literature program for students in Grades 7 and 8, Holten said. Students in Grades 2-8 will learn how to play handbells this year.

Immanuel will be offering volleyball, basketball, and softball programs this year. Home schooled students are invited to join the program. Students from St. Peter’s Lutheran School in rural Gibbon will also be playing with Immanuel.

On Thursday, September 6 and Friday, September 7, games and special activities will be held to celebrate the first week of school, he said.
