Sibley East’s volleyball team will open its 2007 campaign on Monday, August 27th against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. The non-conference clash will be played at Gaylord. “B” squad action will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by the varsity at approximately 7:30.

Nearly 60 Lady Wolverines, grades 7-12, have been gearing up for the season with preseason conditioning drills in Gaylord.

While numbers are strong, it will be time to reload for Sibley East coach Chip Wolverton and his Lady Wolverines. Eight regulars from last season’s team were lost to graduation and senior Abby Marshall is the lone returning letterwinner for the squad.

“Our numbers are good and we have some great athletic ability on the team,” Wolverton said. “The task now is turning that ability into volleyball skills.”

Marshall will serve as co-captain for the Sibley East squad this season along with junior Ashley Martens. Emily Baggenstoss is the only other senior candidate on the squad.

Other candidates working out for Sibley East’s volleyball team this preseason include:

Juniors – Lindsay Thomes, Megan Meyer, Abby Sharp, Renae Rose, Kelsey Brandt, Ashley Salisbury, Sammy Trebesch, Courtney LeGare, Kaylee Weckwerth;

Sophomores – Erin Evans, Lauren Keithahn, Megan Mahon, Angie Johnson, Nicole Grack, Hannah Ling, Teresa Ihrke, Marie Rose, Mackenzie Bade, Whitley Webster, Heather Steffer, Chelsea Gerholz, Kaelea Rovinski, Mandy Arredondo;

Ninth-graders – Val Kloeckl, Katie Bauer, Shannon Bjorklund, Kelsey Sunvold, Paige Swenson, Brenna Webster, Tara Quast, Hailey Becker, Sam Zila, Amanda Jacobus, Kami Mathews, Ashley Traxler, Caitlyn Mathwig, Brianna Hahn and Lindsey Karau;

Eighth-graders – Sarah Tessmer, Whitney LeGare, Lauren Highland, Abby Tourtellott, Mackenzie Petzel, Lauren Farber, Breanna Rau;

Seventh-graders – Courtney Schwirtz, Jordan Thomes, Brianna Montanye, Sara Borchert, Erin Mesker, Brianna Reierson, Stephanie Shimota and Christy Woehler.

Coach Wolverton will be assisted this season by Carrie Pioske. Other coaches on the Sibley East staff include Tom Noack (“C” squad), Amanda Feterl (8th grade), and Michelle Brueske (7th grade).

Sibley East’s volleyballers got a taste of competition Friday in a scrimmage at Minnesota Valley Lutheran. The Lady Wolverines will participate in a six team scrimmage this Friday at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School.

It will be a fast start to the season for Sibley East’s volleyballers as three games are scheduled for next week. After hosting GFW Monday, the Wolverines will play at Le Sueur-Henderson Tuesday then host defending state champion Jordan on Thursday.

Jordan has its sights set on repeating as state champs. The Jaguars return many regulars including standout Brittany Chambers.

Wolverton expects Jordan to lead the charge in the Minnesota River Conference. He also expects the league to again be strong overall with Le Sueur-Henderson, Mayer Lutheran and Belle Plaine also fielding solid teams.
