Rain backs up play in state baseball tourney
August 23rd, 2007Rain, rain go away – there is a lot of baseball to play.
Coordinators for the state amateur baseball tournament were left scrambling this past weekend as rain washed out several opening round games in Hamburg and Norwood Young America.
As scheduled, class “B” teams managed to get their opening round games in on Thursday and Friday. But, steady rains put a stop to class “C” games on Saturday. On Sunday, three games were completed but more rain postponed the remainder of the weekend schedule.
With only three of the scheduled 16 class “C” games in the book, changes have been made for both classes for this weekend. Green Isle will serve as a third site to accommodate all of the scheduled games. The Irish Yard will host state tournament games on Friday and Saturday. There have been no changes made for the final weekend of the tournament which is Labor Day weekend.
Below is a complete listing of state tournament scores from this past weekend and a schedule for this upcoming weekend.
Gaylord fans can watch Islanders standout Brad Walsh in action on Friday. Walsh was drafted by Belle Plaine for state tournament play. According to reports, Walsh will be the starting catcher when Belle Plaine faces Sauk Rapids in opening round action. That game will be played in Norwood beginning at 6:00 p.m.
If Belle Plaine wins Friday, it would play the winner of the Detroit Lake/Searles game on Sunday. That contest would be played Sunday in Hamburg at 7:30.
Only a few local teams remain alive in the state tournament. Green Isle had its season end Friday with a 5-4 setback to Blaine in the opening round of the class “B” tournament. Fourteen innings were needed to decide that contest. In another overtime tilt, Mankato tripped Hutchinson 5-4 in 12 innings.
Chaska represented the Carver Central League in fine fashion Friday. The Cubs defeated Cold Spring and its standout pitcher Zach Femrite 4-3. Chaska will now face Rochester on Thursday at Hamburg. Game time is set for 8:30 p.m.
