Grandson of Gaylord couple is a student at Virginia Tech
April 25th, 2007Desmond Schrupp, grandson of Calvin and Frieda Schrupp of Gaylord, was attending class last Monday in the same building where the Virginia Tech mass shootings took place.
“Unbelievable, shocking and scary.” That is how Calvin Schrupp described what transpired.
Schrupp said his son Douglas notified him at 8:30 a.m. Monday that two people had been shot at the college but his grandson was OK. Two hours later, Schrupp said he received a second call notifying him that there had been more killings but his grandson remained safe.
According to the Schrupps, Desmond was in Norris Hall where most of the 32 people were killed. It is unknown how close he was to the shootings but Desmond could hear the shots, they explained.
Calvin Schrupp said he spoke with their grandson last Monday evening. Their grandson can’t understand why the university was not closed off after the first shootings, he explained.
