Individual section tourney is Friday and Saturday
February 22nd, 2007Sibley East’s wrestlers will try to add to the state tournament hype Friday and Saturday when they compete in the Section Individual Tournament at St. James.
First and second place finishers in each weight class will qualify as individuals for the state wrestling tournament to be held next week in St. Paul.
Justin Rose and Andrew Bates headline the list of contenders for the Wolverines. Rose, a 171-pound senior, is ranked 3rd in Class “A” and enters the section tourney with a record of 29-2. He placed sixth in last season’s state meet.
Bates, a 140-pound senior, is a two time state qualifier and is currently ranked 6th in the state. He has posted a 27-3 record so far this season.
Another top contender is Sibley East’s 119-pound Mark Thoele. The senior shares the team lead for the Wolverines with 30 wins this season and is currently ranked #7 in the state.
Other Sibley East wrestlers bidding for a spot in the individual state tournament include: Jake Zeiher (30-4), Derek Hahn (27-6), Jon Volinkaty (25-6), Brit Keithahn (22-10), Scott Tollefson (21-7), Joey Posivio (19-17), Todd Pauly (18-17), Adam Bates (18-8), Kevin Deno (16-14), Mason Matz (14-15) and Tyler Pasvogel (9-26).
The section individual tournament will begin Friday, Feb. 23 at 4:30 p.m. Wrestling will continue on Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
