EDA awarded grant for “Embracing Active Aging”

January 4th, 2007

Gaylord’s Economic Development Authority has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation. The focus of the grant is “Communities Embracing Active Aging.”

Up to 20 volunteers are needed to attend an orientation and information meeting on Thursday, January 11 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Gaylord City Hall. Lunch will be served to participants. Please R.S.V.P. to Pat Pinske at 237-5168. Leave a message.

Pinske, coordinator of the Gaylord EDA, said that the first meeting is about getting people interested and thinking about ways to help the community. The planning process will take two years. It is a goal to have a variety of participants, including community leaders, businesses, education, law enforcement, and health care.

Later on in the process, a core leadership team will be chosen to identify the project, develop goals and a timeline.

A matching amount of $15,000, which can be cash, resources or in-kind donations, will be provided by the City of Gaylord, Pinske said.

The grant may not be used for existing projects, she said.

The EDA first learned of the grant from Commissioner and City Council member Brenda Pautsch, who heard about it at an educational seminar. She also completed the grant application for the EDA. The EDA was notified of the grant award on Dec. 14.
