Young hunters from area bag first deer

November 17th, 2006

It was an exciting deer hunt for three young hunters from the Gaylord area who bagged their first deer during the recent firearms season.

Twelve-year-old Zach Steuck was less than one hour into his first hunt when he shot a doe with a shotgun. Steuck was hunting with his grandfather Jack Stumm near Pine River, Minnesota.

Also bagging their first deer were Gaylord youngsters Michael Uecker and Paige Swenson. Both Uecker and Swenson were hunting near Mille Lacs. Uecker shot a button buck while Swenson downed a doe.

Those willing to travel for their hunt appeared to have the best success. While the DNR is reporting another record kill this season, hunters afield in the Gaylord area are reporting few sightings of whitetails.

As of Tuesday noon, Neisen’s Bar of Gaylord had registered 22 deer for the second weekend of the firearms seasons which ended Tuesday evening.

Among the biggest deer registered at Neisen’s Bar was a 10-point buck shot by Mike Messner of Gaylord. A total of 13 bucks were registered at Neisen’s.

True Value Hardware in Henderson had 36 deer registered during the second weekend of the hunt. According to store employee LaDonna Bender, most hunters were disappointed in the number of deer they were seeing.

It was a memorable deer hunting season for Gaylord native Josh Pflanz. He shot a 23-point buck near Blakeley on the opening day of the firearms season. The trophy deer was given a green score of 211, according to last week’s edition of the Belle Plaine Herald.

The following is a list of hunters who registered deer at Neisen’s Bar during the second weekend of the season:
